Description

When Africa was divided up by European powers at the Berlin Conference, Ethiopia was one of only two countries that retained its independence. It was one of only four African members of the League of Nations. After a brief period of Italian occupation during World War II, Ethiopia once again gained its independence. Modern Ethiopia and its current borders are a result of significant territorial reduction in the north and expansion in the south toward its present borders, owing to several migrations and commercial integration as well as conquests, particularly by Emperor Menelik II and Ras Gobena. In 1974, the dynasty led by Haile Selassie was overthrown by communists, and Ethiopian became a communist state.

However, from 1974 onwards until the mid-1980s, the Communist government was wrecked with famines, war, and political instability. When the Soviet Union pulled its economic backing falling the glasnost and perestroika policies, the end of communism was all but assured. In 1990, a successful coup against the Communist led by a united front of Ethiopians, Eritreans, and other ethnicities ended communist rule. Ethiopia, following communism, began an era of pro-democratic values in an effort to boost its political clout as well as begin the transition towards a more capitalist economic system. Eritrea was given its independence in 1991, though the Ethiopian and Eritrean government maintained peaceful relations and a close alliance. In 1993, after almost three years of discussion, the Ethiopian government joined Eritrea and Djibouti in founding the Federation of African Nations. A Federal Republic within the Federation, Ethiopia today is one of the major economic contributors to the Federation's success. A very fertile area, massive investments in agriculture have led Ethiopia in becoming what many call "the breadbasket" of Africa. Their large surplus of agricultural goods go to feed not only the entire Federation with little need of imports but also much of Europe and the Middle East. Also to note is the fact that the Federation's capital of Aksum, is also located in Ethiopia.

So this is another submission into my Federation of African Nations series. As you will begin to notice with all flag to come, the green, red, and black colors will always be prevalent. This was mostly me taking inspiration from how many US state flags share the red, white, and blue color scheme. I used the Lion of Judah (as seen on the RL flag of Ethiopia) and kept the Ethiopian colors on its flag. To be honest the flag is basically not far off from the RL flag, just a bit change of color. However, there are others I will be uploading soon where they are practically a complete redesign.

Hope all enjoy :)

Well the idea of this Ethiopia, is that its a nation that's apart of a supranational entity. So just how in the US, some state flags use the red-white-blue scheme in their designs,  each nation in this greater African Federation would use its flag's scheme of green-black-red.

However, you make good points for sure and I'm glade if nothing else my flag design caught your eye :)
